About the Karmanos Cancer Institute   Karmanos Institute

The Karmanos Institute operates one of only 32 National Cancer Institutes designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and is a United Way supported agency. Located in Detroit, MI. and named in honor of Barbara Ann Karmanos, the Cancer Institute is a continuum of research, patient care, education, and community outreach, to share ideas, to improve quality of life for cancer patients, and to save lives. It is the only center in the United States named for a woman.

The Karmanos Cancer Institute fights cancer on four fronts:

Research into the causes, treatments and prevention of cancer;
Leading treatment including advanced treatment options designed to evaluate
the latest diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and drugs;
Education for the next generation of medical students and cancer scientists; and
Outreach programs which bringing cancer awareness and patient services to all area residents.

A History of Dedication

    "The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Foundation has more than 75,000 volunteers working through a network of Affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure® to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. Since its inception, the Foundation has raised $450 million in the fight against breast cancer. From inception through 2001, the Foundation has awarded more than 700 grants for breast cancer research." "Since its origination in Dallas, Texas, in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure® Series has grown from one local Race with 800 participants to a national series of more than 100 Races with over 1.4 million people expected to participate in 2002."
